Where to Find Writing Jobs (Part 1)
I have neither the time nor inclination to create a regular list of jobs on this writers blog, and there are plenty of others out there doing a much better job than I ever could of providing a steady stream of leads, vacancies and markets. So rather than try to fix something that ain't broke, here, in no particular order, are my top places for writers to find work:- Elance and oDesk
I almost cringe to mention these on a writer's blog now given the storm of controversy that they tend to cause amongst writers, however I have personally landed some very nice gigs through both of these, including writing audio tours for a new iphone app and the product copy for two large (and well known) online stores. It takes time to get your profile just right, and you do have to spend some time sifting through the listings, but play your cards right and you might be able to just sit back and let buyers come to you. Another great plus to these systems is that you are able to work with a buyer in a more formal environment. - Morning Coffee
Delivered fresh to your inbox each Tuesday morning this is one of the most comprehensive job lists for writers, covering everything from interns to editors. There are some other nifty newsletters you can sign up for as well as some news features and articles. - Writing For Dollars
Dan Case, the man behind Writing for Dollars, doesn't mince words, and promises that if you follow his advice you will be published within two months! I would take this with a pinch of salt, but his advice is sound, and his newsletter carries some good market listings. The markets database on his site is pretty comprehensive too, and neatly organized into low, medium and high paying. - WorldWideFreelance.com
While their markets are a bit patchy sometimes, it is nice to get a newsletter that includes markets from outside the US. (Check back for more on this topic soon.) The newsletter is free, and their complete market listings are worth subscribing for if you are looking to build your magazine work. They also have some great writing articles on their site. - WritersWeekly.com
A weekly roundup of market listings and jobs. There are also some great articles on this site for writers, including some off-the-wall projects that you might not have thought about. - Matador Bounty Board
You won't find great rates of pay here, but the work is quick and if you are looking to break into travel writing or add some credibility to your travelogue online then this is a great place to start building related clips. - Freelance Job Openings
A simple listing of classifieds that is regularly updated.
I have landed jobs and/ or assignments from most of the lists above, so hopefully you will have some luck too.
It is worth keeping in mind that some of these sites offer a list of jobs that they have aggregated from other sources, including craigslist and other classified sites, so it should go without saying that you should use caution and your best judgment.
