As an addition to her great interview, Kate Gilby shares her favourite writing quote, advice and online resource.
Do you have a favourite writing quote?
“There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein. ~Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith. That one often rings very true to me.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Never, ever give up! Assuming you have a degree of talent, the only thing that will prevent you becoming a published writer is a lack of determination. Keep submitting to publishers and eventually someone will say yes. Also - practice really does make perfect. Writing courses and books are a great way to learn the basics of the craft, but the best way to learn how to be a writer is to write. Conversely, reading is also a great learning experience. Read as much as possible, across a range of genres. One more thing – do start a blog! They are a wonderful way to share your writing with the world; great for helping you understand how to write for an audience; and if you ever need to show a publisher what you can do, just send them the link.
What is your favourite writing site/online resource?
Twitter. There are some great sites dedicated to writing, I subscribe to dozens. Overall though, Twitter is the best single place to share useful information, pick up tips and advice, and get to know other writers, and also publishers.
