As an addition to her great interview, Peggy Bechko shares her favourite writing quote, advice and online resource.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Read and write constantly. If you can locate a great mentor that’s wonderful, but it’s a bonus. Reading helpful books by other authors intended to help guide the newbie is good too, but remember not all their advice will be good for you. Learn to pick and choose from all that reading what really applies to you and your style.
What is your favourite writing site/online resource?
I don’t have a single favourite, there are so many good ones. In general sites like Twitter and Facebook are great for connecting with readers and other writers, editors, etc. There’s a site called Author Tech Tips.com I like for explanations on tech stuff when I need them. Freelance Writing International is a good one for resources (http://www.fwointl.com/) and I used to write a column for them. Good folks. I Kind of like “Write or Die” where you can set a writing goal and write furiously with a humorous kick in the pants handy. And Open Ofice is a great place to grab free (please donate if you like it) office suite for your computer. I like it generally better than word.
Do you have a favourite writing quote?
Attributed to Somerset Maughm: “There are three rules for writing the novel. Unfortunately nobody knows what they are.
