Our series of writer interviews is intended to show the wide variety of work involved in being a writer, as well as the highs and lows of the writing life. I also hope that these interviews will help to dispel many of the preconceptions and myths that some new writers hold, only to have lead to disappointment later when reality hits home. Yes, I’m a full-time freelance writer.
What is your biggest day to day challenge as a writer?
Staying motivated on non-busy days. I love it when I have a calendar full of interviews and deadlines because it gives my day structure. But not every day is like that.
When did you start writing?
I’ve been writing ever since I can remember. It’s just always been a part of me.
Why do you love writing?
That’s the $64,000 question. I have no idea. From the time I was a very little girl, written words were important to me. My mom says that even as a baby, I was very gentle with my books but also very fascinated with books and magazines and newspapers. When I was able to hold a crayon I wanted to make letters, not color. My relatives would sit around the table at my grandma’s house and wonder who else in the family liked to write so they could figure out where I got it from. All I know is I can’t live without writing and my life is miserable if I go too long without it.
Can you share one of your milestone moments from your writing journey?
When I was able to go to my 25th high school reunion and tell them that I had just sent in my book manuscript.
Do you keep a set writing schedule?
I’m in my office from 10:30 to 5:30 most days.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Writing is hard work. If you want to make money as a writer, you have to treat it like a job. Because that’s what it is.
Have you ever faced a situation that almost caused you to give up on being a writer?
Nope.
Is your writing career how you envisioned it?
Not quite. I never in a million years thought I’d be writing about technical topics.
What big writing goals do you still want to accomplish?
Finish a novel.
